There are many good reasons why businesses are moving to cloud applications, for their IT and their business requirements. Low costs of ownership, scalability are speeds are some of the main reasons. Solid State Devices (SSD) are gaining popularity because they provide this low latency, high throughput solution. Larger direct attached SSDs are only available with larger and more expensive instance types.
While instance store disks are fast and provide good IOPS, they are ephemeral and can lose data. The data on these devices need to be backed up at all times on a more reliable device type.
